Synopsis: A mysterious island. An abandoned orphanage. A strange collection of curious photographs. A horrific family tragedy sets sixteen-year-old Jacob journeying to a remote island off the coast of Wales, where he discovers the crumbling ruins of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. As Jacob explores its abandoned bedrooms and hallways, it becomes clear that the children were more than just peculiar. They may have been dangerous. They may have been quarantined on a deserted island for good reason. And somehow-impossible though it seems-they may still be alive.

Abraham Portman, inherited an old story about his past live when he was a kid to his curious grandson, Jacob. Grandpa Portman had lived in orphanage, fought in wars, and survived any wilderness. But, there was a strange feeling about his old story, particularly about Miss Peregrine's enchanted house and the peculiar children used to living there. Even, it was hard for Jacob to believe that the story was true.

After being shown some old yet strange photographs of the peculiar children his grandfather told him and after some years wondering about the story, Jacob was very curious to look for the enchanted house at Wales. And he did it. He found the peculiar children by his own. What his grandfather told him was absolutely true. The girl who could fly, a boy who could lift giant rock by using single hand even the invisible boy were real. They existed somewhere at Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children.

However, after some days staying there and making some friends, Jacob found that everything there was strange. The time was strange since each day repeated. There was no other day existed. It was like living in a constant time machine. It was like the island and the peculiar children were protecting themselves against the real world by keeping the time constant.

Despite the fact that the island and the peculiar children seemed harmful for him, Jacob had just figured out that he was part of them like his grandfather used to be. He was demanded to save both the island and the peculiar children from a big-fat-and-full-of-conspiracy danger. A danger that might turn his world upside down. A danger that might mislead the future. A danger that might endanger himself and his family. Besides, he also found that it was not the danger itself he was facing, but also a secret left by his grandfather.

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children is a very nice book to read. Even though it is strange and weird, but it is very worth reading. For those who love reading mystery and horror-story, this book is highly recommended. It could give you chill down your spine.

The main characters in this story are many. But I would simplify them to Jacob Portman, Emma Bloom (the girl with hands on fire), Alma Lefay Peregrine (the headmistress of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children), and Millard Nullings (the invisible boy).

The story takes setting in both old-day Poland and modern Poland after world wars.

The conflicts found in the story are mostly about Jacob's attempts to protect Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children from a danger outside.

The plot is very intriguing. If you don't read the book carefully, you may get misled. It uses both back and forth plots.

As I can say, I like the book from the very beginning. It was my first time reading such gothic story which is very rich. I used to reading some Stephen King's and Neil Gaiman's but this one is different. The way the author tells the story glides smoothly in my brain. I just love it. Ain't patient enough to read the sequels "Hollow City" and "Library of Souls".

My rating: 4 out of 5 crowns

~Happy Reading~
